Bride of Ollichon - Libby

How long have you been together?

James and I have been together around 5 years. We met through an online dating site. He was living in Norway and I was living in Glasgow. We had been dating for a month or so when we were both offered work transfers to London. It was fate.

Who proposed to who?

James proposed to me. We hadn’t discussed it and marriage wasn’t on my radar. Things were already perfect for us. He proposed in our garden with his grandmother’s engagement ring. He said he wanted it to be somewhere beautiful, outside (he knows I love the outside), personal to us and somewhere we could easily return to... every day if we liked. Morning coffee on our spot under the grapevines.

He later admitted some candidate locations were disqualified as if I had said no it would have involved a long awkward car journey home again!!!

He’s both romantic and practical.

Where did you get married?

We got married in my home town, the Highland village of Dornoch. We were married in the 13th century Cathedral in the centre of the village. I went from not being fussed about getting married to planning a big church wedding 500 miles away from where I (and most of our guests) live. I thought if we’re going to do it then we should really do it. Go big or go home.

What was your inspiration to go dress-less?

There is a sign on the wall at House of Ollichon which says “Be the best version of your regular self” and from the first visit it really resonated with me. I wear jumpsuits and I always feel amazing in them. I love the 1930s Hollywood glamour of a jumpsuit. I wanted all of that for my wedding. I didn’t want to be someone else, I wanted to be me. A dress wouldn’t have been me.

How did you feel in your outfit?

I felt like a million bucks. The locals in the village always line up outside the church to have a nose and when I got out my car I waved at them like I had arrived at the Oscars. I felt like a movie star.

Best buy?

A bra from Selfridges which comes as two separate cups which stuck on to my skin. The weirdest, least sexy underwear you have ever seen but they were perfect for a backless jumpsuit. Hannah’s baby wore one as a hat and looked like a tiny old man!

Biggest surprise?

I had asked my brother to do a reading as part of our ceremony. He originally said he hadn’t felt comfortable doing so but on the day he stood up in place of my Aunt who we had asked instead and read for us. I was in tears. It was perfect.

Did anything not go to plan?!

The caterers forgot the custard on the crumble. Can you believe it?!

But as no one knew there was meant to be custard no one cared. That’s my best advice for couples getting married. Only you care about the little things, no one else will notice. Don’t let the little things get on top of you.

Best moment?

Dancing with my husband at the end of the night. All out friends and family were around us, laughing and doing their own thing. We were right in the middle of a crowd but we could have been there all on our own.

What did your family and friends and other half think about your outfit?

They were wowed, not just by the outfit but how confident and beautiful I felt in it. We included inside the waistband a piece of my grandmother’s wedding dress. My outfit was personal to me in a way I hadn’t imagined possible.

Will you wear it again?

I am going to have it altered to shorten the cowl back before I wear it again. We designed it so that it had enough drama to fill a cathedral (which it definitely did) but it may be too much wow for a dinner out. I will definitely wear it again. I can imagine myself in my jumpsuit at a Moroccan cliffside restaurant as the sun sets. We just need the bank balance to recover from the wedding first.

I am 6ft tall, size 16. I absolutely dreaded bridal shopping. I had nightmares of being squeezed in to sample dresses and quizzed on what my wedding diet would be. One of my favourite stores told me given my size there was no point in me coming in to use their stylist service. I nearly changed the plan for my dream wedding day because I couldn’t face buying a wedding outfit.

House of Ollichon were absolutely wonderful.

I brought my Mum on our first visit and I brought bridesmaids on follow up visits. We were always welcome and laughing. The jumpsuit I had made was a combination of two designs with alterations made just for me... a higher neckline and a swooshier swoosh. I felt special and choosing and fitting my bridal jumpsuit became another wonderful part of the wonderful experience of getting married.
